Travel Information for the Highway 120 N. Region
Hwy. 120 is the most direct route from the San Francisco Bay Area and northern California. Major airports serving this route include San Francisco International, San Jose International, Oakland International, and Sacramento International. The closest Amtrak and Greyhound Bus stops are in Modesto and Stockton. From these hub cities, there is no regular transport to Yosemite, but major car rental services are available.
From Hwy. 99 at Manteca, about halfway between Stockton and Modesto, take Hwy. 120 east toward Yosemite. At Oakdale, Hwy. 120 and Hwy. 108 join. Before reaching Jamestown, Hwy. 120 splits from Hwy. 108 and continues toward Yosemite, passing through Chinese Camp, Big Oak Flat, and Groveland before reaching the Big Oak Flat Entrance to the Park. Driving time from Hwy. 99 is about two and one half hours, with another half hour from the Entrance to Yosemite Valley. It is a good idea to keep your fuel tank full when driving in the mountains, and there are no gas stations in Yosemite Valley.
Road conditions on this route can change at any time due to weather or other natural occurrences, so it is wise to check with Caltrans at 1-800-427-ROAD and Yosemite Park at (209) 372-0200 for the most current information before you leave. When traveling in the Sierra Nevada from November through April, you should always carry tire chains in your vehicle, and know how to use them.
